MEET TOMMY

A Life of Service, Built on Determination

Where It Started

Tommy Cones grew up in Houston’s Heights neighborhood, where his family faced real hardship, including a parent affected by alcoholism. The determination it took to overcome those challenges is something Tommy hopes will inspire neighbors facing struggles of their own.

A 2½-Hour Ride to a New Life

At 15, Tommy decided to build a better life. He left his family’s home in Houston and rode his bicycle to Kemah, Texas — a trip of more than two and a half hours, with no guarantee he would succeed. In Kemah, he joined the Kemah Volunteer Fire Department, and there he discovered his passion and his life’s mission.

After several years as a volunteer, Tommy pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a professional firefighter. He excelled at the Houston Fire Academy and went on to a distinguished 32-year career with the City of Houston Fire Department.

Not Just Another Statistic

With the support of many educators, staff, and friends from Clear Creek ISD, Tommy graduated from Clear Creek High School in 1978 — all while covering his own rent, food, and everyday responsibilities. His determination not to become just another statistic was a powerful motivator.

Home Since 1981

In 1981, Tommy moved to League City, and it has been home ever since. His love of serving the community shows in the many volunteer organizations he has given his time to, including the League City Volunteer Fire Department, League City Proud, Holiday in the Park, and many more.
